Text In 1858 (according to my information), Berend and an older brother, Hinrich(Henry), along with several neighbor boys, left Germany to search for gold inAustralia. They set sail from Port Bremen on "Frigate Lawlor" and were wreckedon January 21, 1858, on a small island in the Irish Sea. About 800 were onboard, and 217 were saved. Hinrich perished and Berend was saved. After threedays, a passing ship rescued the survivors. Seven weeks later Berend set offfor Australia, where he stayed for ten years before returning to Germany.Berend had also served as cook's mate on a whaling vessel, his uncle havingbeen the cook on the vessel. Then he worked as a midshipman before going toAustralia. Quite a colorful man!
